The Kenyan entrepreneurial ecosystem is a robust coming together of multiple players to create a harmonious community. The community comprises the private sector, including startups, SMEs, investors, ecosystem support organisations, public sector including government ministries, agencies and parastatals, Academia with both public and private universities and technical colleges and the development sector, including INGOs, Foundations, Embassies and Consulates, Multilateral and Bilateral organisations. According to a 2019 research by Briter Bridges and GSMA, Kenya is ranked fourth after Nigeria, South Africa, and closely near Egypt as the most advanced ecosystem.

ENTREPRENEUR SUPPORT ORGANISATIONS
Ecosystem support organisations are an integral part of the Kenyan ecosystem development; ESO’s in Kenya include incubators, Hubs, accelerators, consultants, advisory firms, and co-working spaces. Based on a 2020 research Kenyan currently has approximately 160 ESO’s offering support to Kenyan entrepreneurs, both local and international. Despite the significant number of ESOs in the country, the majority having operations in Nairobi; areas outside Nairobi (the capital) have fewer ESOs leading to disproportionate entrepreneurship development in these areas.
In 2019, the Association of Startup and SME Enablers of Kenya (ASSEK), an association established to represent organisations supporting the development and growth of startups and SMEs for maximum impact of such activities. ESOs in Kenyan can be broadly categorized as either:
- Incubators
- Accelerators
- Co-working spaces and Hubs
- Maker spaces/ Fab labs
- Consulting and advisory firms
- Academic institutions
